In Memoriam

Gloria Green

A Lancer out of sight
Never out of mind

We are sorry to inform the Lee community that Gloria Green, the long-time director of student activities at Lee died
on Thursday September 16, 2021.

On Thursday, September 16, 2021, Gloria Lamar Green (née Garcia), passed away unexpectedly at the age of 73.

Gloria was born on May 13, 1948, in San Diego, Texas to Luis Felipe Garcia Sr. and Sarita Garcia.  Her parents were cattle ranchers and she grew up in the ranching lifestyle.  She attended school in San Diego, Texas and was a very athletic child.  She learned how to twirl a baton as a child and became an accomplished majorette in high school. Gloria traveled extensively displaying her talents and was a performer at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City.

Gloria attended Mary Harden Baylor College in Belton, Texas where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education and met her husband, Army 1st Lieutenant David G. Green.  Dave was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and the two married on April 14, 1968 after a six-month courtship. Dave was deployed shortly after the wedding to Vietnam and assigned to A 2/4 Artillery, 9th Infantry Division.

Dave returned from Vietnam in June 1969 and the couple settled in Arlington, Virginia.  Gloria started her career as a physical education teacher with the Fairfax County Public School System, and Dave continued his career as an officer with the Arlington County Police Department.

Gloria continued her education while working full time as a teacher.  She obtained her Master’s in Education from George Mason University and became the Director of Student Activities at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia. Gloria loved sports and the countless students she influenced throughout her career. Upon retirement in 2002, the Fairfax County School Board dedicated the Robert E. Lee High School Gymnasium to her as recognition of her 32 years of outstanding service as a teacher, coach, and Director of Student Activities.

After retirement, Gloria moved to Reedville, Virginia where she enjoyed her passion for boating, fishing and water views.  Gloria and Dave were avid travelers and RVers having camped in all forty-eight contiguous states.  Gloria was a devout Catholic and an exceptionally giving person.  She loved her family deeply and prided herself on always looking after her children, grandchildren, and great grandson.  Gloria was doing what she loved, visiting Great Wolf Lodge, in Williamsburg, Virginia with her granddaughter, grandson-in-law, and great grandson when she unexpectedly passed away from cardiac arrest.

Gloria is survived by her husband David, daughter Marie Lamar Robinson (Jeff), son David G. Green Jr., (Karina), son Michael Gordon Green (Michelle), seven grandchildren, and one great grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at Saint Francis De Sales Church 154 E. Church St., Kilmarnock, Va. 22484.  A reception will follow the interment at the American Legion, 39 School St., Reedville, Va. 22539.
