We are sorry to inform the Lee community that
Jack King, class of 1965, passed on Friday, November 9, 2018.
John Henry King III (Jack), 72, beloved husband, father,
brother, uncle, grandfather and great-uncle, passed away
on November 9th, 2018.
Born to Col. John H. King, Jr. and Sunny King, Jack grew
up on Marine Corps bases both stateside and overseas. He
excelled at sports and played most of them, but his
favorite was football. He played for both his high
school and college teams, and never lost his love for
the game.
Jack spent most of his career with the Drug Enforcement
Administration. First as a field agent, then group
supervisor, followed by 6 years in India as Country
Attaché, before returning to the States in posts as
Deputy Assistant Administrator for Information Systems,
Assistant Special Agent in Charge of Operations, and
ending his career as Deputy Assistant Administrator,
Office of Diversion Control.
His love for New Bern, North Carolina stemmed from his
1950's home at Cherry Point. He always knew he wanted to
return here, and did so upon his retirement in 2002.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Stacey Griffith,
his son Nicholas and wife Melissa, grandson Mason, and
sibling's sister Betty, brother Pete and wife Tracey
King, niece Kim and husband Alex, and great-nephews Mac
and John Henry, and his cousin Elaine Hiner, and family,
also of New Bern. A celebration of his life will be held
at a later date.
Jack had many gifts, among which was an ability to
accept people the way they were. You never had to change
to be Jack's friend. And Jack was generous to friends
and strangers alike. He was never too busy to lend a
helping hand to anyone needing it. He is deeply missed
by his family and many, many friends.
