In Memoriam

Janet Elmore
Nicodemus-Hughes

A Lancer out of sight
Never out of mind

It is with great regret that we must inform all of R.E. Lee High School alumni and the class of 1967 of the death of Jan Elmore on December 24, 2017.

Jan Hughes has died after a five year struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Courageous and faithful through it all, her memorial service was held at Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, 203 Dennison St, Colonial Beach, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 20th, 2018. Bishop Susan Goff was the celebrant.

Jan was professor of Biology at the University of Mary Washington and deeply read in religion and philosophy, but a scientist and Christian always. She was graduated from Mary Washington College and the University of Virginia.

She is survived by her husband, Reverend Thomas R. Hughes, Jr., of Fredericksburg, her daughters, Katie Van Liew of Charlottesville and Martha Golubock of Atlanta, her grandchildren, Lydia Van Liew, Evelyn Golubock, and Charlotte Golubock, her father, Robert H. Elmore of Ponder, Texas, her other children, Thomas R. Hughes, III, of Albuquerque, Anne Hughes Rucosky of Jennerstown, Pennsylvania, William B. Hughes of Chestertown, Maryland, and Mary Margaret Hughes of Charlottesville.

Memorials and love offerings may be made to Saint Mary's Church, 223 Dennison Street, Colonial Beach, Virginia 22443.
