Richard
Lynn Alexander, M.D., age 52, beloved husband of Julia
"Jackie" Elliott Alexander, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at
Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Alexander was born Aug. 2, 1954, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of the
late James F. Alexander Jr. and Grace Eileen Traubert Alexander. Dr.
Alexander was a 1985 graduate of the West Virginia University School
of Medicine and was board-certified in emergency medicine. He was the
medical director of the emergency department at Bladen County
Hospital, Elizabethtown, N.C., in 1996 when they were given the
national "Come Back Hospital" award for hospitals under 100
beds. He also established the only completely volunteer advanced
life-support EMS program in North Carolina. The program was later
integrated into a paid EMS system. During his fifth year as a staff
physician at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, he was diagnosed with
multiple myeloma. Following chemotherapy, radiation and bone marrow
transplant, his immune system forced a medical retirement from
emergency medicine. He did consulting work for medical malpractice
defense cases, was the author of "When a Friend has Cancer"
and wrote a weekly column for The Item. Dr. Alexander enjoyed
life to the fullest. He loved to travel, especially to Italy, was an
avid cruiser, enjoyed gardening and all outdoor activities. His
passions were practicing medicine, teaching and writing. He loved to
ballroom dance with Jackie. He was a member of Bethesda Church of God.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his father-in-law, Wriston
McQuay of Washington, N.C.; one daughter, Michelle Renee Hill and her
husband, Jimmy, of Washington, N.C.; one brother, Don Alexander and
his wife, Mary, of Mechanicsville, Va.; one brother-in-law, Jack
Elliott and his wife, Diane, of Millers Tavern, Va.; one
