On April 24, 1968 while serving as a reserve pilot
in the Air Force, 1st
Lt. Parker was a wingman in an F-4D Phantom fighter jet on a night
strike mission to destroy an enemy storage area near
Van Loc,
North Vietnam.
His aircraft went down after receiving enemy
fire and it was not known whether the pilot or Woody had been able to
eject.
While declared Missing in Action, Woody was
promoted to Major.
However, on June 7, 1978, his status was
changed to Died While Missing.
His remains were repatriated in 1993 and
identified in 1998.
Woody had just turned 25 six days before the
crash.
He rests at
Arlington
National
Cemetery.
